Is Cody Bellinger's Return to the Yankees Linked to Trent Grisham's Decision? Scott Boras Weighs In
LAS VEGAS — Aaron Judge remains the Yankees' right fielder, with Jasson Dominguez set to play full-time in left next season. The team has offered free agent center fielder Trent Grisham a $22.025 million qualifying offer for 2026. Meanwhile, center field prospect Spencer Jones, who had a 35-homer, 29-steal season in Double-A and Triple-A, might be major-league ready.
This development raises questions about Cody Bellinger's potential return to the Yankees, who had a standout season in 2025 and could be their top offseason priority. Bellinger's return hinges on Grisham's decision regarding the qualifying offer, which could impact the team's strategy.
Agent Scott Boras, representing Bellinger, shared his insights during the GM Meetings, emphasizing Bellinger's versatility and performance.
"The Yankees aim to improve, not weaken," Boras stated, addressing the team's interest in re-signing Bellinger. "Grisham's decision on the qualifying offer shouldn't affect the Yankees' interest in Bellinger, given his MVP status and consistent performance over three years."
Boras highlighted Bellinger's exceptional skills, describing him as the only five-tool free agent outfielder. He praised Bellinger's defensive versatility, noting his ability to play all three outfield positions and first base.
"Bellinger's a versatile viper, providing power and production in the middle of the lineup," Boras said. "He's played in major markets like LA, Chicago, and New York, making him an urban maverick."
Bellinger, 30, had a successful season with a .272 batting average, 29 home runs, 98 RBIs, and an .813 OPS in 152 games. He demonstrated adaptability, playing in various positions.
Boras expressed confidence in Bellinger's market value, suggesting a seven-year contract in the $210-million range. However, MLB Trade Rumors predicts a five-year deal worth around $140 million.
Bellinger expressed his enjoyment of the Yankees organization and his adaptability, stating, "I'm very adaptable. I've lived in different places, but I want to play with a winning team."
The Yankees' interest in Bellinger is contingent on Grisham's decision, which must be made by November 18. Boras believes the team's dynamic suits Bellinger, and he hopes for a successful reunion.
