The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) finds itself in a deep crisis, with a recent development threatening to further divide the party. The Damagum faction, true to its word, went ahead with the party's National Convention in Ibadan, taking a bold and controversial step.
In a move that has sparked controversy, the faction expelled key figures, including Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, and Ayodele Fayose, the former Ekiti State governor. The party's national secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, and its national legal adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, were also among those expelled.
However, not all party members are in agreement with this decision. Two state governors, Adamu Fintiri of Adamawa and Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, have publicly distanced themselves from the expulsions. They argue that such a move was not discussed with them and question how it will benefit the party's unity and stability.
Fayose, at the time of his expulsion, was celebrating his 65th birthday in Lagos, adding an ironic twist to the situation. The faction's actions have not gone unnoticed, with loyalists of Wike branding it an early Christmas spectacle.
The convention also saw the election of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, from Kebbi State, as the new national chairman, unopposed. His election was made possible after his co-aspirant, Senator Yakubu Lado, stepped down.
But the controversy doesn't end there. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials were notably absent from the event, seemingly adhering to court rulings instructing them to stay away. Several prominent party members, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, were also absent, with Saraki warning that the convention would serve no purpose.
In addition to the expulsions, the convention dissolved the party executives in several states, including Rivers, Abia, and Imo, which are perceived to be under the control of Wike's supporters. This move was proposed by Chief Olabode George, the former Deputy National Chairman of the party, and supported by host Governor Seyi Makinde.
George emphasized the need for party members to adhere to the PDP's constitution, stating that political parties are voluntary organizations. He accused the expelled individuals of various breaches, including holding parallel congresses and sponsoring litigations against the party.
The expulsions and dissolutions were unanimously supported by party members present at the convention, with some citing the 2017 Constitution of the PDP as justification.
Governor Fintiri, in a statement, expressed his concerns about the potential impact of these expulsions on the party's internal tensions. He emphasized his commitment to peace and stability within the PDP and urged all stakeholders to work towards unity and reconciliation.
Governor Mutfwang shared similar sentiments, stating that expelling party leaders at this critical juncture was not a strategic move. He called for unity and collective efforts to rebuild and reposition the party.
One of the expelled individuals, Umar Bature, labeled the convention and its decisions as illegal and null and void. He questioned the legitimacy of the process and the authority of those making these decisions.
As the controversy unfolds, the PDP finds itself at a crossroads. With key members expressing dissent and legal battles ongoing, the party's future hangs in the balance.
